MODO Q&A with Magic Online director Worth Wollpert
Power 9 on MODO: "I never like to say never, buuuut..." Worth says bigger fish to fry and can only do it once.
Log-in security: Gordan Culp says it's in the works and part of integration with Wizards Community accounts
Masques block: "Will be on MODO, but won't tell you how."
Player-run events, cube: "On the radar, casual/team drafting probably sooner. Cube is a favorite at WOTC, likely on MODO."
On PTQs/high-level events: WotC_K "Prize support not likely to change, but always fighting with Organized Play for more slots."
4322 drafts vs 84/swiss (11 packs vs 12)? "More of inertia rather than a conscious decision."
Built-in MODO notepad? "In the new UI spec" #mtgoQ&A
Mac/iPad MODO: "Return on Investment question, hard to say but circle back to the discussion every few months."
Better social interaction within MODO? "Part of Wizards Community integration so will take a while, but incoming. Easier in new UI."
Voice chat: "We *talked* about it, want to make it to be opt-in for playing with friends. Moderation issues."
"Duels of the Planeswalker has had noticeable effect on Magic and MODO as well. Huge upswing on new accounts."
"Want to build better tutorials, support for new players. New UI will have better platform, then a matter of content generation."
What are the BIG FISH? "Stability, new UI. Lot of moving parts in day-to-day operation. Three outages last week are a big issue."
"Back-end support. Old client had 2,800 max. Daily averages now are double that."
"Once the new UI is out the door, we can start working on the other stuff."
"In-game bug reporting, possible solutions discussed, needs to be easy-to-use. Also has impact on compensation request/reporting."
Secondary market booster prices: "We don't look at secondary market prices, but sometimes moderate it on community level."
"Can't really make decisions on the trading value of the packs. Have tried revolving payouts before that doesn't really work."
Generic booster packs? "Need to do more research. Isn't convinced it will have the effect the community thinks it will."
Increased Pauper/PauperSTD support? "Pauper Standard likely to split community. Formats need critical mass."
"We hate killing formats, but always have new stuff to try."
Custom format filters might be a possibility, but sounds a long way off.
Digital set releases? "Discussed pushing NPH release up, but was constrained by schedule in place, internal testing hard to push."
"Online set release will never be simultaneous. Internal testing almost as compressed as possible. Prereleases help."
"Promos for joining events might come back. Maybe for specialty formats."
"Exciting promos are a finite resource. Not all promos are Nature's Claim."
Favorite working experience? Gordon says "Worth's wife sent in some reaaaaally good cookies in the other day."
In seriousness, "Travel to events, interacting with community."
MODO format support, do you think there could be a Pauper MOCS? "I do."
Lifetime MOPR promos "Hero of Bladehold will be one, one will be something previously unreleased."
Timeline for new MODO UI, Gordon says "eeeeennnh, bad luck to talk about dates, but beta will be starting soon."
Want to take MODO specialty formats to where Commander is now, heavy interaction/input from community regarding B/R lists etc.
Prizeless, cardless drafting under a subscription model? "Subscriptions have been considered occasionally."
"Looking at ways to increase participation at a lower cost for people with different bands of time, but affects entire ecosystem."
MTGO shredder for unwanted commons? "Priority-wise not high on the list."
re: digital card shredder: "Does having 26,000 commons prevent you from playing Magic? Never."
LEAGUES: "If they were as important business-wise as we previously thought they were, they'd definitely be back by now."
Leagues, cont. "It's also a huge amount of work. There's a significant amount of time needed. We are comfortable where it's prioritized."
"We will have leagues back."
MTGO live series at pro events: "Didn't have a large impact. Wasn't doing well. Expensive to carry computers around."
Magic Online at GenCon "We want to make sure people know modo exists, esp. for players who don't have time to play in paper."
MODO new UI previews, very brown. "The brown is optional."
@cupcheckGE for people who just want to get rid of throwaway commons
Just had a great discussion with Gordon Culp on the new UI. Sounds like lots of problems are v3 specific and will be left behind.
What problems aren't fixed will be fixable in the new UI. They are happy with the way the backend servers are working.
