Gifts ungiven es una carta con un solo objetivo: Un oponente; ya que "target" solo aparece una vez en la carta y seguido de "opponent". Una vez que sabemos esto vamos a aplicarlo al caso que formulas. Planteo dos situaciones diferentes, porque veo que mezclas un poco los conceptos:
A) El oponente controla Runed Halo que ha nombrado gifts ungiven. Quiero lanzarle un gifts ungiven.
702.14. Protection
702.14a Protection is a static ability, written “Protection from [quality].” This quality is usually a color (as in “protection from black”) but can be any characteristic value. If the quality happens to be a card name, it is treated as such only if the protection ability specifies that the quality is a name. If the quality is a card type, subtype, or supertype, the ability applies to sources that are permanents with that card type, subtype, or supertype and to any sources not on the battlefield that are of that card type, subtype, or supertype. This is an exception to rule 109.2.
702.14b A permanent or player with protection can’t be targeted by spells with the stated quality and can’t be targeted by abilities from a source with the stated quality.
La regla en negrita especifica que no puedo hacer objetivo a mi oponente con el gifts ungiven. Y como no hay más objetivos válidos (no tienes más oponentes), no puedes lanzar el hechizo.
B) Lanzo el gifts ungiven. Mi oponente, mediante Vedalken Orrery o cualquier otra maldad, lanza/ pone en juego un runed halo, nombrando mi Gifts ungiven.
608.2b If the spell or ability specifies targets, it checks whether the targets are still legal. A target that’s no longer in the zone it was in when it was targeted is illegal. Other changes to the game state may cause a target to no longer be legal; for example, its characteristics may have changed or an effect may have changed the text of the spell. If the source of an ability has left the zone it was in, its last known information is used during this process. The spell or ability is countered if all its targets, for every instance of the word “target,” are now illegal. If the spell or ability is not countered, it will resolve normally, affecting only the targets that are still legal. If a target is illegal, the spell or ability can’t perform any actions on it or make the target perform any actions
En este caso, gifts ungiven mira en resolución a ver si sus objetivos siguen siendo legales, y como tu oponente ya no puede ser objetivo de gifts ungiven (único objetivo), pues se contrarresta en resolución.
Hay que diferenciar los dos casos. El de calafell fue más parecido al segundo. Cuando jugó el hechizo, la aldea en las copas era un objetivo legal (noncreature permanent). No obstante, cuando se fue a resolver, ya no lo era (su oponente lo había hecho criatura, ya no era noncreature), así que como era su único objetivo (el otro modo de command no hacía objetivo), pues se contrarrestó en resolución.
